This blog will take shape as time goes by. As of the moment of writing the direction, shape, and purpose of this blog are unknown. As it will serve as an advertisement for me as a man of language, however, being bland is not an option. For that reason, it may actually avoid being boring or irrelevant. Since it is to advertise my abilities and ultimately get content and a life of its own, the blog may end up in places where it was not originally intended to be.
The obvious place for this blog to start will be commenting on the three languages I advertise and on the countries in which they are spoken, with regard to English, that area may in itself prove to be too great for any number of blogs to cover. I have chosen to write in English, even though it is not my native tongue, as English will be of interest as well as understandable to a greater number of readers.
When one deals in languages and tries to make one’s living in them, a necessary by-product of linguistic training is a ear for language. This ear is a somewhat protean phenomenon. To me it takes the shape of two things, first an ability to learn more languages easily, as one’s training allows one to identify the difficulties of a given languages with greater ease, second it develop an ear for one’s native language, as it is the source of what one does, in my case, Danish. The ear itself can very often make one unpopular in a given circle of people, as one’s tolerance seems to lessen, in my case probably also because of age, to the point where corrections are automatic and unwelcome.
The point to remember when correcting others must be that it should not be done out of spite or disdain, but sometimes that is not easily done. One invariably comes across as a bit of a w….., but there are worse things than that. The only risk is to put oneself out there, which is also the point of this blog.
This is a small step for me, where it takes me, I wish I knew.
